William Pethick
Trombonist Will Pethick is regarded as one of Australia’s upcoming jazz talents. After completing high school in Perth, Western Australia. Will decided to study music at the prestigious James Morrison Academy of Music in South Australia. During his time there, he shared the stage with some of the world’s best musicians including James Morrison, Joey Defrancesco, Wycliffe Gordan and Mat Jodrell. Upon graduating he was awarded the medal of Performance Excellence amongst his competitive cohort. In 2018 Will was selected amongst the countries best to be a James Morrison scholarship finalist. This scholarship has a long history and winners include Australian jazz legends such as Troy Roberts and Jamie Oehlers. In 2021 Will was selected to be a part of the Australian National Youth Jazz Orchestra, who performed as part of the 2021 Sydney Con Jazz Festival. Over the years Will has performed as a sideman on some major Australian albums, these include: Venessa Perica’s Love is a Temporary Madness, Jayden Blockley’s, I Wrote a Song For Her, For Me and Steve Hensby’s Modern Music for Modern People. After moving back to Perth, Will further developed his skills at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), and performed regularly in the Perth scene as a leader and a sideman with bands such as The Love Rats, Neshama, The Western Australian Jazz Project, Perth Symphony Orchestra and many more. Moving to Germany in 2023, he became a fixture in Berlin and Hamburg's music scenes. In 2024, he launched his electric jazz group, Intelligent Design. Currently pursuing a Master of Music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg studying with the great Nils Wogram Will continues to leave his mark on the international jazz scene. Will is currently living in Berlin, Germany and performing with some of the country’s best artists including and bands. Uwe Steinmetz, Robin Draganic and the Merry Band, The Berlin Psalm Project, NDR Big Band and the Omniveral Earkestra.
